Queensland law requires all homes to have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms by 1 January 2027. Upline Electrical handles the full compliance upgrade — supply, install, and certificate.
Queensland deadline
1 Jan 2027 All existing dwellings must complywhat the law requires
The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990 was updated to require a higher standard of protection in all homes.
All smoke alarms must be photoelectric type. Ionisation alarms (the older type in most homes) are no longer compliant and must be replaced.
All alarms must be interconnected — when one activates, they all sound. This can be done wirelessly, so no major cabling work is required in most homes.
An alarm is required in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on each storey of the dwelling.
Alarms must be either hardwired to the mains with battery backup, or fitted with a non-removable 10-year lithium battery.
Alarms must be ceiling-mounted where possible, positioned according to AS 3786 requirements for maximum coverage.
Most homes built before 2017 will need an upgrade. Upline Electrical assesses your current setup and handles the full upgrade — no guesswork needed.
who needs to act
The deadline affects everyone — but the obligations vary slightly depending on your situation.
the process
Most homes can be fully assessed, upgraded, and certified in one appointment — usually under two hours.
Use the ServiceM8 booking form to pick a time that suits you. We'll confirm within 24 hours.
Daryl inspects your current alarms, counts the required positions, and confirms what's needed.
Compliant photoelectric alarms installed and interconnected professionally and efficiently. Tidy workmanship, no mess left behind.
You receive a signed certificate confirming your home meets Queensland's smoke alarm legislation.
ongoing smoke alarm servicing
A compliant alarm that hasn't been serviced in years may not actually work when it needs to. Annual servicing confirms every alarm in your home is operating correctly — and keeps your insurance and compliance records current.
Every alarm is triggered and tested to confirm it produces the correct audible alert — both individually and as part of the interconnected system.
We verify that activating one alarm triggers all linked alarms throughout the home simultaneously — the core requirement under QLD legislation.
Dust and debris in the sensing chamber can cause false alarms or reduce sensitivity. We clean each unit thoroughly as part of every service visit.
We check and record the manufacture date of each alarm and confirm remaining service life. Photoelectric alarms have a 10-year lifespan — we flag any units approaching replacement.
You receive a detailed service record documenting every alarm tested, alarm type (hardwired or wireless), test results, and next service due date — essential for insurance and rental compliance.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services recommend annual professional servicing. For landlords, it's not optional — alarms must be maintained in working order between tenancies and at lease renewals.
Most smoke alarm manufacturers require evidence of annual professional servicing to maintain the product warranty. Units found to have excessive dust or debris build-up in the sensing chamber may not be covered — and in a worst case, an insurer could use lack of maintenance as grounds to dispute a claim.
Whether we installed your alarms or not, we're happy to take on the servicing. Book online and we'll take care of the rest.
